Hey, flautists! Gathering for 5d and wenxiang pre-hell NS gathering.

Details as followed:

Date: Thursday, 4th sept, 2008
Time: Meet 7pm
Venue: Not decided yet

I have got a list of suggestions but do not know which one your would prefer, so here it goes.

1.) Subway ( healthy and cheap but no halal)
2.) Chocolate buffet @ fullerton ( 38 bucks, its expensive i guess)
3.) seoul garden, town/orchard outlet ( good for everyone but not very healthy)
4.) International Buffet@ melt cafe ( I just check the price, its 54 bucks, too ex alr, unless your are very rich lah!)
5.) Chomp Chomp ( quite far away and I dont think its halal)
6.) dempsey Hill ( lots of nice restaurants and ambience but i think need take taxi)
7.) Marina Square ( M.O.F= Japanese Food)
8.) Sushi tei ( I got 15% voucher)
9.) Changing Appetites @ Marina Square

Either you choose one of those above and tag in the tagboard or make some other suggestions.
I will tally everything by tomorrow night when I reach home. I will choose the majority: i.e even 2 against the rest of 1 will be considered as majority. Please help me make things easier by not complaining already. I have a hard time planning all this. Thanks guys!

*I brought home the scores to photocopy more for everyone as I see that its not enough.
I will print a set for everyone based on the parts you are playing and please keep the scores properly. In case you lose the scores, you are responsible to photocopy the scores yourself unless there are extras in the file.
The scores will be available in the band room on monday from 6pm onwards, so if you need the scores, you can call me straight to get it or go to band room to get it after 6 on monday. The scores will be put nicely with paper clips stating your names in the green file. Please take only yours. The green file will be yours for usage.

*Please ensure that you practise the parts during your own free time and try to attend all the band practices from now till IBM. We are only left with 6-7 practices till then. So please inform Kellyn with valid reasons if you are not able to make it for band practices. thanks.

As Kellyn is very busy with her studies due to the course she is taking, Joseph will be helping her in taking over some of the sectionals to reduce her load, so hope you all can cooperate by turning up for sectionals all right.

As for me, I am having a tight schedule now rushing through my fyp and major projects, so I will try my best to turn up for all my practices as much as I can.

I hope everyone will enjoy the practices in band, be it sectionals or combine. If there is any problems you are facing are have difficulties handling studies and band or some other issues, please feel free to look for anyone in the section to talk to, especially our sectional leader or any of the seniors. We are all kind people(: hahaha.

And lastly, our sectional leader has sadly declined our idea of changing the display pics at the side of this blog. So ya, let's just stick to this " nice pictures " of us. hahaha.

How the bidding system works?
Everyone is given 20 credits to bid for 2 pictures they want. And in case you didn't realised, we have not took 20 pictures in total yet, so we still have some left overs! We'll take the rest together some other time, so meanwhile one person can only take 1.5 pieces of polaroid, which is impossible actually. So bid for your favourite pictures (two only!) now. The person with the highest bid for the particular picture can get the picture they want, and you can get your 2nd picture if it is not taken by anyone. If it has been taken, I'm sorry but you can only take 1 picture at the moment, and wait for the next time when we take the pictures. (:

If it happens that 2 person or has the highest bids for the same picture, the person that bids for it first will get the picture. First come first serve basis. The rule is that simple, so here's how you can leave your bid on the SP Flute tagboard! Bids from SMS/MSN will not be entertained as to be fair to let everyone know what you've bid and who bid it first. At the end of the day, I'll still gather the bids together and post an entry on it.

IBM Camp is finally over, and it was a bittersweet experience for me, or maybe even to some of you as well. Well, the most obvious reason is of course the fact that, for the very first time, flute section didn't win anything in the section competition. )': Tears were shed, not because we didn't get anything, but the reason being that we didn't put up the best performance we had at the actual competition. But it's alright, that's part and parcel of learning.

Futhermore, we had 5 year ones and 3 seniors. So from what we achieved from our sectionals, I'm very contented already. (:

Like I said in the previous entry, winning or not doesn't matter, really! And to me, I can proudly say that we're a champion because we've achieved what we target for, other than section competition. And that's unity and bondedness. (: I'm glad to see the year ones getting closer amongst themselves, and even between the seniors as well. I'm really proud of all of you. Very. (:

A big thank you to Wen Xiang for guiding the section through this competition, because without you, I doubt we can even play the whole piece through without stopping. Your patience is greatly appreciated, and we're sorry for not being able to perform to our best at the actual competition. We all love you all the same anyway. (:

Emily, thank you for persevering on for the section by playing 2nd piccolo for the section competition even though you really didn't want to. But all of us have seen you progess till what you can play now, and we're all very proud of you! (:

Joseph, thank you for holding on and staying with us even though I know that there are some reasons for why you choose not to hang around with us. I really appreciate the fact that you choose to stay on with us till thus far, and without you the section definitely can't be where it is today.

All the year ones, thank you for putting in the effort to make time for sectionals. Without your attendance, I'm sure we can't even put up a performance, much less a proper one. Please continue to put in your best for the upcoming concert, and we'll continue to progress. (:

Hey my dearest flute section! :D

Okay, I'm just putting up a few reminders for you guys while getting ready for the band camp tomorrow! So here I've put up a checklist that you guys might want to bring to the camp. (:

Sleeping Bag
Clothes (about 2 sets of sleeping wear), undergarments and towel
Slippers for bathing and covered shoes for section competition
Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, comb and your other necessities.
Laptop (if you want, but I really doubt that you'll get a chance to use it)
Handphone charger
Camera (if you have/want to bring)
Water bottles
Enough cash as we'll be eating out ourselves

And just a reminder, if you guys have forgotten, you'll need to get a totally white or black top for the section compeition. Please note that the bottom wear would be jeans and covered shoes. No shorts or skirts! Anyway, here's the arrangement:

I STRONGLY AGREE, bonded section more important than winning k! when i see our section go eat together, go somewhere together, go do things together, go outing together, do almost everything together, I THINK WE WIN. NO, is, WE REALLY WIN.

First things first - point of section competition:

to bond the section.
to instill ensemble awareness in the section, and in individuals.

It has been going on for quite awhile that it's more like a I-kill-you-and-you-kill me session between sections for a really long time since, and as read earlier, this is definitely not the purpose of the competition.

But who don't want to be a winner? I've made my stand clear to my section members that we don't need to clinch the 1st position, we just need to put in our best to put up a good performance. It's easy to be a good musician (well, not that it is impossible to achieve), but it's not easy to forge bonds. So to me, if we managed to bond the section and be closely knitted, we're already a champion.

Then again, it doesn't mean that we can sit back, relax and do nothing. We should still strive to win. However, if we don't win, let's take it to our stride because we've learnt and earned something, be it friendship or a lesson. Remember to show some sportsmanship if we are not the champion, congratulate them.

In our case, it applies to our section. I hope everyone do something about this.

P.S: Flute section is not being kiasu and stressed up about the section competition at all (I'd confidently say). We're just putting our best, and wish for the best possible. I hope you can think before saying, because many a time it's because of things people say without going through their minds that stirs up many unhappiness. So take a step back, think before acting and it'll do many good. We've been keeping our cool about such comments and acts for quite a while already and I hope no one and nothing will try to continue such senseless things that brings about unhappiness.

A tiger will not be enraged unless one steps on its tail and triggers it - so quit trying to get the tiger into a whole scene of angst despite calming itself time and time again. There's a limit. Know it, and stop repeating it.

Two - I'd like to remind our section members about certain issues:

No one is given special treatments, even if you are the best player. So please attend sectionals that has been arranged and come for band practices and report back from breaks punctually. For every 2 times you're late = 1 absent.
I don't wish to see people doing their own warm ups outside when Fabian is conducting warm ups for the band, because I don't see why one should be so special when everyone else is inside. If you're here for band practice, but wants to practice outside for certain things (of course, it must be a valid reason) please ask for my permission first before doing so. If you're not seen in the band room during band practices, your attendance will be taken as zero, and failure to comply to attendance requirements will not allow you to perform for upcoming concerts/events. Then again, you shouldn't be asking for permission to play outside because you should have done your own self-practice at home.
I'm not saying this for the first time, but I hope you guys will bear in mind - Using of hand phones is not banned, but please have some self discipline and stop using hand phones constantly during band practices/sectionals. I don't like to scold, and I'm sure you don't like to be scolded as well.
If we plan to have section lunch/dinner together, please make an effort to come for it because everyone else is doing it. Unless you wish to be the one that's left out from the section, because I believe that such things can actually help to bond the section.
There's a time for fun and a time for serious matters, so please draw a line between them.

I'm not pin-pointing anyone, but I'm telling this to the entire section. So please take no offence to this, and if you're feeling guilty of any of the above, I hope you'll do something to it soon.

Three - Band camp will be held from the 12th June to 14th June, and section competition will be on 13th June (Friday), in the night. During this whole camp, we'll move around and do things together as a section for bonding purposes.

Four - Those that have not paid the $8 today for section fund, please remember to bring by the next sectional/band practice.

Five - Year ones are encouraged to ask for the seniors msn/email/handphone numbers, and you should already have the whole section's contact by now. If you haven't, do something about it! And, you are also encouraged to blog here as well. If you haven't received an invitation, ask me for it.

HELLO FLUTE SECTION!!!!! HELP ME!!!!

I am looking for people interested in piano lessons, for beginner and ABRSM grade 1 to 5 only. Prefer about 6 years old (primary 1) onwards, negotiable if younger. MUST have full range (88 keys) piano at home, can be electric piano, or planning to buy one soon.

Lessons are either 4 times per month or 2 times per month. One hour lesson for 4 times per month. Two hours lesson for 2 times per month. 5th week not included.

For 4 times/month, suitable for younger children who require more attention and supervision. Take step by step.

For twice/month, suitable for more independent students and students who already have some musical knowledge. Students have more time and learn much more things in 2 hours lessons. Take a large step at a time.

Please ask me personally for the lesson fee details and additional *transportation fee if applicable (not application if at my place).

*Transportation categories:
1) Within Jurong, 4 times/per month,
2) Within Jurong, twice/per month,
3) Outside Jurong, 4 times/per month,

Next, I would like to set some ground rules for the section and I hope you all will abide to it.

Using of handphones is not prohibited during band practices. However, if you're constantly messaging (like checking your phone once every 5 minutes) is not tolerated. And please set your phone to silent mode during practices.
Please bring about $5 to pay Emily for all the folders that she has paid for the section first.
Tentatively, sectionals will be held every Wednesday at 1600.
Those that has yet to print a copy of your timetable, please print one for me.

Hey everyone, this is the first entry I'm posting here as a section leader. /: (Gosh, I hate this.)

But anyway, like Emily said in the previous entry, I'll be assigning roles for people in the section to help out with our section stuff. So, currently Emily is like the treasurer and welfare manager and Joseph will be in charge of helping us with the scores, and the photocopying and such. We need the kindest co-operation from every single section member - which apparently is only Emily, Joseph and I, and hopefully more to come!

Please respect them when they request something from you, because I've appointed them with these tasks and they have every right to bug/correct you for them.

ATTN TO KELLYN, JOSEPH AND FUTURE YR ONES:

Hey everyone, I have come up with a flute book to record everything for easy reference.( To help kellyn ting) hahaha.

The book will consist of fund collected from each flautist, claims to make, birthdays, plans, everyone's school timetable and messages that you might want to leave for anyone etc. That's all I can think of now. Your can also doodle or draw anything inside the book since I will be leaving it in our section's cupboard.

This is how it goes:

1)We will collect $3 initially for buying stationery and printing stuff, so please try and claim receipts if your are buying/purchasing anything on behalf of the section.

2.) Do your prefer that I collect $1 each month from your or collect $6 bucks at one go for half-yearly? Pls do reply through the tagboard. thanks.

3.)The balance from the fund, we will either go for a small outing or buy some snacks for the flute section. This will include the Alumni too, so don't worry (:

4.) I think most probably Kellyn will plan the sectional days once she gets everyone's timetable since we have so many performance coming up. I think the least we can do is attend the sectionals and do self-pract too.

5.) I hope that the Alumni can come back to help us as and when you can or maybe just join us back for some band practices to make everything more fun.

Yupps, I think that's about all. We will plan a short getaway trip to some nearby country if possible lah. We need some bonding sessions, please come back the Alumni! haha

MD...kinda happy to see my poster design on alot of people's blog...it seriously looks so much better on screen than printed.Regret not changing font...oh well

So anyway.I left my microfibre cloth,saliva cloth and stick,flute stand and G.F. Handel Sonata in bandroom.Crap. No one touches it ok. Not even the almight new SL...unless I ask you to take for me :)

So anyway again.MD was memorable.

I won't forget making Kellyn so worried an hour before concert.Sorry lil sis.I know the others were cursing in their mind ( "like wtf faidhi not now!?" ).You received so many compliments...i think none of us ever received that much in one night.really.

I won't forget Joseph's shocked face after we finished playind Die Meistersinger.Haha.Priceless.

I won't forget Weifen's optimism.Damn that girl is really positive.Even after i screwed up abit in Die Meistersinger,she still can say I did a job.Very comforting to hear it even though I know I could have done better.

I wont forget our very own Pontianak.All eyes on you for Ghost Train intro.Seems like we both stumbled abit in our solo intros.

Musical Delights XXXI was great with you guys! I can never forget this wonderful experience I have with you all. These few months of hard work was well paid of, and I enjoyed being part of this family. This family of love and care for one another. Never would I expect that you would quit school (right before exams!) and to make the decision to enter NS, and I suppose that the route you would want to pursue on after that would be music, am I right to say? Three months, neither too long nor short, but indeed has forge such a bond in the section. Upon hearing the news that you are leaving after the concert, I was jolted real bad. So sudden and bad that I cried and I am sorry for starting the others to start crying as well. ): Now tell me, who is going to be the piccoloist and future SL (in my eyes at least)?! You're so irresponsible, running away from your uncompleted tasks that is laid before you. The flute section won't be the same ever again without you. No one to laugh so hard at the lame jokes that I crack. ):

But I guess it was also a tough grapple in you as well to finally come up with this decision. Even though I would really hope that you will be staying with us (at least till when I am year two!), I respect your decision and I hope that you will make it great in this music world.

don't be silly! u need a good flute before going for exam!

i've not many recommendations cuz the best flutes in the world are probably those that we heard/know of. muramatsu, powell, miya, MATEKI (very popular in japan) or an altus ps(1707) mod. -- .997 pure silver! if u strike toto one day, can consider the sankyo flute that pahud uses. if got spare cash can buy one for me also! heehe

we've received complaints again from the double reed section and the QMs (according to wat they said) that we didnt do our duties well for the past few weeks.. so if the QMs are not satisfied with our performance by the end of next week, we'll need to do our duties again from 01/06/2007 - 30/06/2007.

i completely understand how dreadful it is to come earlier and leave later than the rest to do duty. and people around are "upbraiding" us (until i didnt think it was our fault), but i'll stop the whining, cuz we're really to be blamed. next week is the final week already, let's do a clean and good job before we really get punished for another month of duty!

VIBRATO: THE KEY TO MUSICAL EXPRESSION

One of the most overlooked and abused areas of flute playing at all ages is the use of vibrato. The problem is that some flute teachers do not teach students to develop the vibrato. It is not something that should be taught in the first lessons. However, it is a good idea to let student hear beautiful flute sounds with vibrato in those first lessons. The best singers, violinists, cellists, trumpeters, and saxophone players use vibrato, and i encourage you to listen to these players and closely check out the way they use the vibrato on both long and short moving notes. This will give some good sonic guidelines on which to base your style of vibrato.

VIBRATO POINTERS
________________________

Keep the speed regular, but not exact rhythmic subdivisions.
Avoid a choppy (throaty), rapid or uncontrolled vibrato.
Don't only vibrate on long notes, vibrate through moving notes to help the musical line to connect and sing.
Think of the vibrato spinning and shimmering rather than pulsating heavily.
Keep the vibrato within the sound. Don't let it bump the sides of your sound in a heavy, noticable manner.
Practise the vibrato with a metronome to develop control of the speed and intensity (depth).

CAUTION!!! The practise method of playing exact rhythms using the metronome is only for your laboratory work. It is a necessary step on the way to incorporating the vibrato into your musical expression. Good musical phrasing requires a vibrato that sometimes speed up and sometimes slows down. Generally longer notes sound best with 4 pulses per quarter note at about M.M. = 72-80. Moving notes need a faster and narrower vibrato about M.M. = 84-92. These are only guidelines and are in no way absolute recommendations.

ya... just some things to share... i think i am still under laboratory work process... so still developing.. maybe that's why mine is like very heavy, very exact rhythmic.... will try to develop a more flexible vibrato...some things to share too (personal ones la.. varies differently, just to let u all noe what i am thinking about):

modern way of vibrato always start a bit later in a long note
classical way is standard vibrato all the way at the start of the long note
staccato or short notes should be very fast vib
fast moving phrases should depend on intensity of the music and add vibrato accordingly into these moving notes (very fast vib)
slow music should also follow intensiy of music and vib accordingly
to be really really very very very very very sad sad sad sad and expressive, DO THE BIGGEST AND FASTEST VIB U CAN!! (example, crying part of the music, music for a festival, the flute solo)
for normal smoothin and light music, just do light vibs.. (most of the songs)
for dead music, no vib (this one have to read the history of music)

in any case, there is no right or wrong, depends on the music, the intensity, the song, the dynamic etc etc....... and yes, FOR SP flute section, only solos will be entitled to this, agreed.

by the way piccolo vibrato should be fast and narrow, light can already(quoted also)....

SO YA!!! just sharing and sharing for the better of flute section!!!!, VIB ONLY SOLOS!! and SOLIS! if laoban wans the whole section to do together, i think no choice we have to use metronome and rhythms per beat so that we are together...(this is also quoted somewhere from the net specially for flute sections in bands)..

we need to learn how to listen more to each other and think more about blending.. let's achieve a decent, clean and straight tone in our section first before we proceed on with stuffs like dynamics, phrasings and vibrato. and no point hanging on with you or my preference... doesnt matter now. can we all agree on this, concentrate on sounding as one first? deciding on section comp piece now is really an over-ambitious plan. i think we're not at that stage yet. sorry for being too assertive........:(

i understand tt some of us had been squeezed out of the band room during our rehearsals due to the overwhelming freshies (esp in flute section)...sorry and thanks for understanding. anw pls continue to come for practice cuz membership will confirmed very soon. it means u'll get back ur seat in no time. after calculation, the band hav a total of 120+ freshies, around 20 belonged to flute sect! gosh... but thank God 65.78% of the part of whole dont have music background. right now we've 8 playable/working flutes, so not facing shortage of instru YET. next time i'll update u guys the names of those yr1s who'll be joining us permanently.

I don't think i sounded like i wanna play "unhealthily" for this competition... We’re not going to play any dirty tricks

Maybe I should say that I regard what XX said as a spur that encourages me to make greater effort for this competition… and “not to throw seniors’ faces” as a strength of mind to work harder. This may or may not apply to everybody, but to me it does.

In view of the fact that it’s defined as “a competition” -and in competitions people try their best to do something better than the rest in order to be the victor-, I feel that not only we need enthusiasm in music making, we also need driving force. Think about it, this section comp thing is designed to identify the outstanding section and showcase them during the concert… and since it only comes once in a year, won't it appear wasteful if we don’t try our best =) So let’s work hard and challenge it!

Believe that all hard work will be paid off - Like what Mr. Tan said, if you want it badly enough, you’ll get it.

about section com....

1) Why was the section com first initiated? Its actually initiated to increase repetoire ( ensemble ) awareness. Also inculcate healthy competition.
2) Give each section exposure to perform as an ensemble
3) etc...

lets not treat it as a throw face thing. If our seniors really think we throw their face because we don't win nor perform well, then i really dunno what to say. Room for improvement - everlasting. Just do our best and most importantly...have fun...if ever we stop having fun when making music, stop.

PS: let people say what they wanna say. and also reflect on what people say if its true. =)

breathing exercise.. try it with metro and tuner.. follow the instructions carefully.. do push-ups to experience the strain at the back and side diphrm muscles.. or put ur hand at the sides.. and cough... etc etc

then hold that position, together with adominal muscles, FIRM it, NOT PUSH IT OUT... theres a dif... pushing out is not the correct one..... FIRMING it then is right one........................... FOR THIS excercise... i mean.......... choose and take what u prefer and what ur concept believes in.. hahaha

after 15 seconds.... try 20 seconds.. then 25 seconds.... and so on.... high and low notes FOR ME, i am taught to puff... haha

u choose. haha, the purpose is to save air, airstream should be like needle.. the size.... but alot of support and pressure to create the tone and sound..

and the 6 tone part under 'Trevor Wye' Flute tone... are
1. colour (consist of harmonics and overtones)
2. size
3. projection
4. intensity
5. vibrato
6. purity

chinese web but nvm.. just listen to the song.. chinese pop song la... but the flute is yellow tone.. hahaha imagine using purple tone on this song... doesnt fit....

the starting few notes are low Ab, Bb, middle C and Db.... this notes easier to get yellow tone... TRY IT! hahhaha
